Whenever I find myself becoming rather nervous about something (in this case, it was an audition) I usually end up doodling. I find the repetitive movements and soft scratching of the pen across paper helps to calm my nerves. Combined with some soft classical or sometimes a podcast burbling away in the background, it’s the perfect way to forget that in a couple of hours you have to sing for someone (argh!). This doodle ended up with two good results; the audition was successful and I start the first rehearsal tonight and I ended up with a doodled piece that I was happy with.

After making it all the way through Winter without getting sick I have managed to pick up some form of beyond awful flu in October, which in Brisbane is essentially the start to Summer. While horrible for my health, it has done wonders for my drawing. When all you can struggle to achieve is splutter at your desk while you drag some pens across paper, you end up creating rather a lot! The only other bonus of this bug is that I now sound like Darth Vader.
Come to the dark side, we have cough medicine and tissues.

Lettering with Louis Armstrong for Made In The Now

Last Saturday I got to design a tshirt again for Made in the Now. The clear winner in the daily morning Facebook poll to decided the story for the day was the news that a rare Louis Armstrong recording had been released. After researching (read: poking around on Wikipedia), I discovered that Louis Armstrong’s recording of Heebie Jeebies in 1926 was one of the earlier examples of scat singing, where singers improvise using undecipherable syllables and vocals1. These weird collections of sounds presented the perfect excuse to do some more doodled lettering so I spent the rest of the morning sketching and drawing away while listening to Louis Armstrong. Morning well spent!

2. Yes I did just reference a wikipedia article in an incorrectly formatted footnote. My university lecturers would be cringing :P
